A Family Affair

With both his father and his grandfather in the printing business, it was no surprise when Mike Connon decided to follow in their footsteps. In 1997, Mike bought The Print Place in Ajax when the owner of the company died. "I was working as a co-op student at the shop back then and with the sudden demise of the owner, Bill Scott, his wife presented me with an offer, if I would be interested in buying the place, and the rest is history," says Mike.

He recalled that growing up, he had seen his family associated with this trade so the decision to be in this field was more expected than inspirational. "My educational background is in print and so is my family history, so it was a natural choice," he says.

Children who accompanied their parents are now accompanied by their children. We have served a generation of families who come back to us because of record turn over time in delivering products, and our customer-centric approach. Not to mention we are reasonably priced, too. - Mike Connon, owner

The Changing Nature of Business

The printing business has seen a lot of changes that has even surprised pioneers like Mike. "The changing nature of this business from the time I started till today is quite astonishing. As compared to earlier days, peoples' printing needs have shifted with the advancement in technology. With more and more people using websites for their businesses, the demand for catalogues has lessened considerably," he says.

Mike acknowledges that The Print Place took more time to implement technology than it should have. "In retrospect, we should have adopted the digital pathway a few years earlier, but now it does not matter, as we are on track when it comes to facilitating the requirements of our customers who are in the market for products made from digital technology."

Mike also says although the rapid shift towards digital technology was expected, it was not anticipated to happen at such a fast pace. "Ten years ago, people would use a 100,000 run on the printing press, but not anymore. In the digital world, the emphasis is on small quantities as compared to the offset printing era, where the stress was always on larger numbers," he says.

A Loyal Customer Base

With its history dating back to 1980, and with only three owners, it’s no surprise that The Print Place has many long-established customers. "Children who accompanied their parents are now accompanied by their children. We have served a generation of families who come back to us because of our record turn over time in delivering products, and our customer-centric approach. Not to mention we are reasonably priced, too," explains Mike.

Mike considers printing to be a field that's evolving quickly and says it’s important to be adaptable to new advancements in technology. "Though the design part will remain the same, printing has become more web-based, therefore, experience in graphic design will be more beneficial than just printing," he says. As for Mike, he says he's not ready to leave this line of work for anything else. "I knew before entering this career that this profession wouldn’t make me rich, but it would contribute towards making a decent living."
