The definitive guide to a healthy New Year's

November 6, 2014

Most New Year's Eve parties involve crowds, noise and alcohol, but there are plenty of ways to get around that. Here are alternatives that will leave you feeling refreshed, rejuvenated and ready to start a new year.

The definitive guide to a healthy New Year's

Run

Instead of downing glass after glass of champagne on New Year's Eve, why not put on your running gear instead? There are plenty of ways to pursue your athletic side instead of partying or drinking with your friends. All over the country, you can find Midnight Runs, flash mobs and other events where you can race for the finish line instead of the bar. Usually the events include like-minded athletes, fireworks, food and other fun add-ons. Look for a race near you.

Movie marathon

Depending on the weather, the roads can get pretty dangerous on New Year's Eve, so why not stay off them all together? Invite some friends over for a movie marathon. You can download or rent some films you've been meaning to watch. Perhaps atrilogy, movies by your favourite director or some featuring your favourite actor or actress. Make a night of it by offering some snacks, filling the fridge with healthy beverages and sitting back to relax while surrounded by people you love.

Reflect

Instead of going out and having a crazy time, why not sit back and reflect a little on New Year's Eve? It's the perfect time to pause and think about the last year, what you've achieved and what you're looking forward to in the upcoming year. New Year's doesn't have to be about celebrating one night — it can be about celebrating yourself. Make a list of all the things that make you proud and all the joy you've had over the last 12 months.

Learn something new

Get a few friends together and either teach each other or hire someone to teach you something you might not know. You can learn how to make sushi, create origami, try painting with water colours or anything that interests you. It's a great way to share your passions with friends and to start the new year knowing you've learned something valuable.
