Meals on wheels: Your guide to Calgary food trucks

Calgary's food trucks are officially back on the road – and Calgarians are set to flock to devour their delicious offerings. These trucks are so popular that there are several events dedicated for you to try them all (YYCFoodTrucks puts on about 10 such events per season) – but when they’re not set up at a festival, the best way to find each food truck is through the Street Food App, or by following them individually on Twitter. Festivals of food

Hosted by YYCFoodTrucks, Picnic in the Park will follow April’s hugely successful Spring Frenzy food truck festival with more than 15 trucks. Furthermore, there will be live music from 10 at 10 Music and Culture, who host a number of hip-hop artists in Calgary. The event is scheduled to take place May 27 and 28 at Murdoch Park in Bridgeland. Stay tuned to the YYCFoodTrucks event page for more food truck fun throughout the summer.

For the cheese fanatic

Perhaps no food item better combines convenience with deliciousness than good ol’ fashioned pizza. Luckily, many food trucks are specializing in improving upon the old, such as Avatara with their fire-roasted hearthstone ‘za. Their Crusty Cowboy pizza was even featured on the Food Channel. The crafty names don’t stop there – make sure to devour the T-Rex, made of a tangy tomato sauce topped with ham, salami, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni and bacon. Follow them at @AvataraTweets.

Cheese fans, rejoice – you’ve never had savoury cheddar like this before. Ms. Mac N’ Cheese serves up dishes like the Grilled Mac N’ Cheese (covered in bacon, naturally) and the Ms. Piggy, which is barbecue pulled pork mixed with mac n’ cheese, fried onions and ranch dressing. Lastly, fresh on the menu is the Buffalo Chicken, which - you guessed it – combines mac n’ cheese with buffalo chicken. Check out @msmacncheeseyyc on Twitter for more info.

One of the hippest pizza joints in Calgary, Without Papers, is now taking its doughy delights on the road. Catch them riding around the city in their big red truck, offering authentic Italian slices with names like The Domino Effect, which entails ground chuck, caramelized onions, cherry tomatoes, peppers, blue cheese, horseradish and chili flakes. Find them at @WOpizza.

For the protein lover

The burgers from Wilk’s Booth are absolutely huge – it’s a test of will just to wrap your hands around this beefy, savoury beast of a sandwich. Luckily, they are as mouth-watering as they are filling. Check them out at @Wilks_booth.

Specializing in the unique but delicious combination of fried chicken and Belgian waffles, Waffles and Chix can be found all around downtown Calgary with their signature white gravy and maple syrup. It’s a real breakfast/2 A.M. snack wrapped up in one appetizing meal. Follow them on Twitter at @wafflesandchix.

Jane Bond BBQ specializes in Spanish tapas with a cosmopolitan flair. Try flavours inspired from cultures around the world such as Calamari, Jerk Chicken and Mango Bruschetta. They also offer everybody’s favourite decadent snack, Deep Fried Pickles. Find them at @JaneBondGrill.

For those with a sweet tooth

Don’t call it ice cream, folks, it’s gelato. And you’re certainly going to want some to wash down that enormous burger. You’ve definitely seen Fiasco Gelato’s products in the supermarket, boasting bold-faced flavour titles such as Bourbon Vanilla Bean, Frozen Hot Chocolate, Salted Caramel, Creamy Coconut and Dairy-Free White Peach Iced Tea. If those sound delicious, you are correct. Follow them at @fiascogelato.
