Winter is always coming in Canada, but there's nothing like coming home to a bowl of hot homemade soup. This is where your slow cooker comes in. Here are some slow cooker soups for you to warm up to this winter.

Some quick and easy slow cooker soups

Corn chowder

Corn chowder is a hearty winter meal. It's also very easy to put together. Here's how:

  • Peel and cube five potatoes along with two chopped onions.
  • Combine these ingredients with 400g (about 1 2/3 cup) of diced ham, three chopped celery stalks, one can of undrained corn, 30 ml (2 tbsp) of butter and a pinch of salt and pepper.
  • Place all of these ingredients into your slow cooker.
  • Add water and two chicken bouillon cubes.
  • Cook on the low setting for eight to nine hours.
  • Then, when you get home in the evening (or around the eight and a half hour mark), stir in one can of evaporated milk and cook for an additional 30 minutes.

Italian beef barley

This quick classic, is easy to whip up in your slow cooker. This is what you need to do:

  • Combine one kilogram of raw, cubed, beef chuck roast with 1,175 ml (about 40oz) of water, four cubes of beef bouillon.
  • Then add half of a chopped onion, one can of tomato sauce and 177g (about 3/4 cup) of uncooked pearl barley into your slow cooker.
  • Sprinkle salt and pepper to taste then cover and cook on low for five hours.

Split pea

This split pea soup is guaranteed to warm your stomach on a cold winter day. To make it, place the following in your slow cooker:

  • one package of dried green split peas
  • 400g (about 1 2/3 cups) of cubed fully cooked ham
  • one large chopped onion
  • 200g (a little less than 1 cup) of chopped carrots
  • three cloves of minced garlic
  • two tsp of dried rosemary
  • two tsp of dried thyme
  • one carton of chicken broth
  • 400 ml (13 1/2oz) of water.

Once you've put all the ingredients together, cook the mix on low for eight to 10 hours.

Classic chicken noodle

Everyone loves a good chicken noodle soup recipe and this one couldn't be easier.

  • To start, put four boneless chicken breasts along with 1,420 ml (48oz) of water, one chopped onion, two stalks of chopped celery and a dash of salt and pepper to taste, and in your slow cooker.
  • Cook on the low setting for six to eight hours.
  • When you arrive home (or around the 7 hour mark), remove the chicken and chop into small pieces.
  • Then, adjust your slow cooker setting to high and add one package of egg noodles to the mixture.
  • Cook until the noodles are tender and return the chicken to the slow cooker.
  • Continue to heat your soup until it's warm, then serve it up.

Warm up from the inside out
