Everyone knows it; the start of the school year is fast approaching and, with it, a long list of things to buy. If you want to avoid the crowds at the superstore and support local businesses while you're at it, this handy guide can help get you started. What's more, these small independent stationers often stock product that you won't find anywhere else. [image credit: iStockphoto]

The best stationery stores in Montreal

Nota Bene

In this large, bright space, you'll find everything from notebooks to pencils to desktop storage systems. The catch? It's hard to pick out just a few items when you'd quite happily leave with the entire contents of the store!

Boucle & Papier

This charming boutique on Boulevard St-Laurent in the Mile End is sure to enchant you with its careful selection of products. Boucle & Papier is most known for its original notebooks and calendars, but also for decorative items and greeting cards.

Baltic Club

Baltic Club is much more than a stationery store; this club offers its own products made in its on-site workshop alongside some meticulously chosen items sourced from other businesses. We're nuts for their adorable notebooks with original designs that you can even personalize in store!

Papeterie Casse-Noisette

Located in Old Montreal, Papeterie Casse-Noisette isn't just festive in name (“casse-noisette” meaning “nutcracker”). Expect to find decorations, greeting cards and gift items, along with traditional notebooks and pencils. This is the place to go to make someone else's day – or even brighten up your own!

Le Parchemin

Located near the Université du Québec à Montréal, this institution offers a large selection of school items and pencils – a great way to combine work and pleasure. You can find all sorts of back-to-school items here, even stylized backpacks and pens so you can take notes in style.

Papeterie du Plateau

Only a 30-second walk from Beaubien Station, Papeterie Le Plateau is your one-stop shop for school or office must-haves. Whether you’re shopping for school supplies, office furniture or even ink cartridges, you’ll find what you need at this stationery store in Petite-Patrie. What’s more, 5 per cent of the proceeds from back-to-school shopping go towards the Madeleine de Verrières Foundation.

Sylvestre Delasalle

A firm fixture in the neighbourhood since 1977,  Sylvestre Delasalle encourages visitors to reconnect with paper and pencils, to slow down and let their creativity flow through small steps such as writing letters and taking notes by hand. We love it!

Happy shopping, and above all a good start to the school year!
