5 ways to create a sustainable wardrobe

April 20, 2021

While we all love to shop for hot new trends each season, our clothing consumption habits are creating serious environmental consequences. Fifty percent of clothes purchased at fast-fashion retailers are thrown away in less than 12 months, contributing to the 26 billion pounds of textile waste dumped into landfills each year.

The fashion industry is responsible for 20 per cent of global wastewater, 10 per cent of carbon emissions (more than that international flights and maritime shipping combined), and millions of plastic microfibres are released into the world’s oceans every time we wash our clothes.

In honour of Earth Day Canada this month, consider making small habit changes that will have a big impact. Here’s are five ways to create a sustainable wardrobe by repairing and restyling your old clothes and shopping in a more environmentally conscious manner.

Get organized

Pull all of your clothes out of your closet and take a good look at what you’re working with – you just might uncover some long-forgotten items. Reorganize your closet and display your clothing in an attractive way that’ll inspire you to get dressed each morning.

Repair and tailor your clothing

When taking stock of your wardrobe, see if any of your existing pieces could be given new life with a little mending or some alterations. You’re likely holding on to a pair of ripped jeans or a baggy dress with an outdated hemline. Use a simple sewing needle to repair damaged items, so you can put them back in the rotation and take a trip to the tailor to alter ill-fitting clothes.

Buy vintage

If you’re committed to having a sustainable wardrobe, shopping for pre-loved clothes at thrift stores can give you that new fashion fix in an eco-friendly way. Go treasure hunting among the racks at your local vintage boutique and enjoy the thrill of uncovering incredible styles from decades past.

Restyle your old clothes

Extending the lifecycle of your clothing can help offset your environmental impact. In fact, if we wear our garments for an extra nine months (rather than buying new items), we reduce our collective carbon, waste and water footprints by around 20 to 30 per cent. It’s easy to create fresh outfits with clothes that are already in your closet:

  • Mix and match. Layer pieces in unexpected ways to revamp your style. Add a silk blouse or collared shirt under a sweater for a polished vibe or play around with layering multiple jackets for a look that’s both on-trend and warm.
  • Prolong seasonal items. Don’t put away your summer threads after Labour Day. Rock a turtleneck under your favourite maxi dress and pair skirts with retro-chic knee socks.
  • Accessorize. Breathe new life into your existing wardrobe with interesting accessories. Try belting a simple shift dress at the waist to give it a new silhouette, add a colourful kerchief to a plain tee, or top off your outfit with an embellished hairband.
  • Tuck and tie. Transform the shape of an oversized shirt by tying a knot in it or tucking the front into the waist of your pants (aka the effortlessly cool French tuck).
  • Dress up your loungewear. Sweats aren’t just for around the house. Elevate cozy joggers by adding a tailored blazer or try pairing your favourite hoodie with leather pants for an urban-chic fit.

Recycle and reuse

Instead of throwing away unwanted clothes, take your wares to a local donation centre or host a clothing swap with your friends – either virtually or in person – and trade well-worn togs among your pals. You’ll pick up some new-to-you items without spending a cent and take pleasure in seeing your pals restyle old clothes from your closet.
