5 wine hacks you'll wish you'd known sooner

October 13, 2015

Whether you're enjoying wine over the holidays or pairing it with a delicious birthday meal, drinking wine is a great way to socialize with friends. Here are five tips you probably didn't know about to improve your experience even more.

5 wine hacks you'll wish you'd known sooner

1. Add frozen grapes to white wine

If you have a warm bottle of white wine that you want to drink right away, try chilling it with frozen white grapes.

  • The grapes act like ice cubes to chill the wine in your glass without watering it down, and they only enhance the flavour of it.
  • At the end, you'll have some wine-soaked treats in your glass to enjoy.

2. Get rid of cork pieces with coffee filters

Sometimes it's impossible to avoid getting pieces of cork into your wine bottle. However, you don't have to resign yourself to drinking the small solid pieces.

  • Try placing a coffee filter on the top of your wine glass, then slowly pour wine through.
  • At the end, you'll have a glass of pure wine and a filter with cork pieces you can throw away.

3. Use a blender as a decanter

When you have a stuffy or musty bottle of wine, many people allow it to sit in a decanter to air out to optimize its flavour.

  • You can speed up this aeration process by simply pouring it into a blender and blending it on low for about 30 seconds.
  • This will introduce the oxygen the wine needs to reach its best flavour, and you won't have to wait hours to drink it.

4. Freeze leftover wine

Wine doesn't keep too long once the bottle is open, however, rather than pouring out the end of the bottle down the drain, pour it into an ice cube tray and freeze it.

  • When you're cooking recipes that call for wine, you can simply use a cube or two to add to the recipe.
  • This will stop you from wasting the bottom of your wine, and you don't have to open up a whole new bottle when a recipe only calls for a splash or a cup.

5. Open wine without a corkscrew

Don't have a corkscrew on hand? Simply use a screwdriver to screw a screw into the cork, then pry out the cork with the back of a hammer.

These are just a few tricks to help you enjoy that lovely glass of vino any time of the year.
