4 thoughtful Mother’s Day gifts new Moms will appreciate

1. Offer a spa day

There's nothing a new mom probably needs more than some relaxation and rejuvenation. A spa day will give her a chance to get away for a little while and enjoy a range of services that will help her mind and body feel reinvigorated.

  • Visit a few local spas or go online to see if gift certificates are available. Some spas may offer packages that are specifically tailored to the needs of new mothers and may even offer specials for Mother's Day.

Every exhausted new mom deserves some pampering at the hands of local spa professionals.

2. Serve breakfast in bed

If your favourite new mom is usually busy taking care of the baby and handling household tasks while everyone else sleeps, serve her breakfast in bed on Mother's Day.

  • Ask her to name a few of her favourite breakfast foods, then make them for her. And it goes without saying, bring breakfast to her on a tray so she doesn't even have to get up to enjoy the first meal of the day. Remember to dress up the tray with nice cutlery, a cloth napkin and some cut flowers to make it extra special.
  • While you're at it, offer to take care of the baby during the morning and give the new mother some time to relax and enjoy the day.
  • If there are toddlers in the house, make sure they give Mom some peace and quiet too. Consider asking if a neighbour might watch them for a few hours.

3. Create a memory scrapbook

Since the holiday is about being a mom, consider giving the new mother a photo-filled scrapbook of her journey to motherhood.

  • Include mementos and photos from the moment she found out she was pregnant, pictures taken during the pregnancy and photos and reminders of all the sweet memories she has had since baby's birth.

Organizing all the photos and mementos in a memory scrapbook is a personal and meaningful way to mark the occasion, something the new mom will remember forever and love to look through years from now.

4. Give her a day off

Give the new mother in your life a day off from all the household chores.

  • For starters, offer to clean the house, do the dishes, fold the laundry and vacuum the carpets. You should also consider cooking all three meals and handling the baby, too, if possible.
  • If there are other children in the household, especially of toddler age, try and keep them occupied so Mom truly has the time all to herself.

Even one day off can help a new mother feel relaxed and rejuvenated. A day off can also give her a chance to see her friends or get out and run errands, which is something she may have a hard time doing when she's on Mom duty – which counts as double if there's a toddler in the house, along with baby.
