Great tips for a vegetarian barbecue

October 13, 2015

Delicious summer barbecues are not just for meat-lovers. Here are some great meat-free recipe options for both vegetarians and veggie-lovers alike.

Great tips for a vegetarian barbecue

1. Side dishes and starters

  • Putting vegetables on the grill gives them an awesome caramelized flavour.
  • You can pretty much use any vegetable you want, but make sure it's hardy and won't fall apart in the cooking process.
  • On the flat part of your grill, try sliced onions, mushrooms and peppers.
  • The slatted side is good for veggies like eggplant (cut them into round discs first) and asparagus.
  • Corn on the cob is also a favourite: simply wrap the cobs in foil first.
  • Always season your veggies before you start cooking them: a simple salt and pepper mix is fine, or amp up the flavours with some basil or even cayenne pepper.

Veggie kabobs are another fun and easy side dish or starter.

  • Grab some wooden skewers and simply thread on chunky-cut veggies.
  • Peppers, mushrooms, and even fruit (try cubed pineapple) work well.
  • Kabobs are ideal for any fussy eaters, as people can mix-and-match to create their own perfect combination.

2. The main event

  • Grab some of those big portobello mushrooms and stuff them with diced veggies and cheese. Grill on the barbecue until the cheese melts for an easy and filling main dish.
  • For something a little different, try grilling some tofu. Slice firm tofu into large pieces, brush with your favourite marinade, then grill for around seven minutes each side. Tofu tends to stick to the grill, so make sure you have adequately oiled the surface first.
  • Halloumi is another non-meat option that is great as a main or side. This tangy Greek cheese holds its shape when grilled. It can be added to salads or enjoyed on its own. Try grilling large slices of halloumi, then squeeze some lemon over the top when it's done.

3. High protein swaps

  • There are numerous meat-free barbecue foods out there nowadays: try tofu dogs, veggie burgers or sausages.
  • If you're feeling really ambitious you could even make your own veggie burgers: chickpea-based burgers tend to hold together the best.

So many people think barbecues are just for meat lovers, but that's not the case. There are numerous meat-free that are so delicious, even meat lovers won't miss the meat.
