Congratulations, you're getting married! You're heading into one of the most exciting times of your life but it's easy to get overwhelmed with planning. These guidelines will help you plan six to nine months before the wedding date so your special day will be spectacular.

What to do 6 to 9 months before your wedding

Pre-wedding checklist

  • Set the final guest list after receiving input from both sets of parents
  • Shop for and purchase wedding invitations, announcements, and thank-you stationery/cards
  • Register for bridal registries at local retailers as well as online stores
  • Select and order gowns for bride's attendants and order formal wear for the groomsmen and ring bearer
  • Secure a fabric swatch of the bridesmaids' gowns and have shoes dyed to match
  • Make the final bridal attire selections including veil, shoes, garter, lingerie, trousseau, and other accessories
  • Schedule an appointment with a photographer for a formal engagement photo
  • Schedule an appointment with your selected videographer to shoot some pre-wedding footage for inclusion in your wedding video
  • Accompany the mothers of the bride and groom to shop for dresses for the occasion
  • Make appointments with a few bakeries for cake tastings and book the bakery as soon as possible
  • Make appointments with at least three florists to discuss your floral needs for the ceremony and reception and book a florist as soon as possible
  • Make appointments with at least two caterers for tastings and book one as soon as possible. If your reception will be at a hotel venue, book an appointment with the catering manager to determine your selections.
  • Make arrangements for a tent, chairs, garden furniture, etc. if you are planning an outside wedding and you do not plan to engage a caterer or wedding consultant to manage these details
  • Confirm the musicians and singers for your ceremony and reception
  • Organise and document the arrival of wedding gifts and send thank you notes as soon as possible
  • Take dance lessons as a couple for that ever-important first dance as husband and wife
  • Finalise honeymoon plans and reservations with your travel agent and make sure that passports, visas, inoculations, and medical insurance information are current
  • Make appropriate arrangements for time off work a few days before the wedding and for the honeymoon
  • Host a party for wedding party members

You're getting closer! Just follow these steps and you'll feel great knowing that your wedding planning is under control.
